AMD Leverages 50x15 Initiative to Enable Affordable Internet Access for Educational Programs

Hector Ruiz in Russia

To kick off the roundtable, Ruiz announced the donation of PICs to orphanages in the city of Voronezh. AMD also announced a series of agreements to support several Russian educational and scientific research projects. Under the agreements, AMD will empower scientific institutions with AMD Opteron™ and AMD Athlon 64™ processor-based computing solutions, support local IT efforts of regional administrations, and provide PICs to universities.

Working with the administration of the region of Perm and the Perm State Technical University, AMD plans to help establish a centralized IT infrastructure to support regional initiatives such as distance learning projects for public and private sector employees. AMD will also help develop and deploy information, communications and technology (ICT) solutions throughout the region and provide consulting services to help drive economic growth and create new jobs.

AMD also plans to build two R&D centers at the University. One center will focus on embedded systems for industrial applications based on AMD Geode™ development kits, while the other focuses on high-performance computing applications based on AMD Opteron™ and AMD Athlon™ 64 processor technology. PICs in the reading room of the university library will provide the school's 30,000 students with Internet access and e-learning opportunities.

AMD has also entered into a formal agreement with Techno Park Kurchatov to support its role in the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor project (ITER) with AMD processor-based solutions for HPC computing. Evgeny Velekhov, chairman of the ITER said, "AMD's leading technology has great potential to enhance modeling of complicated math algorithms, simulation systems, and the next level achievement of power generation for the ITER project."

These agreements build on AMD's existing relationships with various Russian educational institutions and government bodies that have already deployed the company's technology, including Keldysh University, Bauman University and International Dubna University.
