Digital Inclusion Ecosystem Classification:
Inveneo and AMD
AMD is collaborating with Inveneo on several Learning Labs as part of the New Project for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) e-Schools Initiative. Inveneo has provided hardware and implementation support for NEPAD 50x15 Learning Labs in Uganda, Mali, and Burkina Faso. In addition, Inveneo, with 50x15 support, recently launched the Inveneo Certified ICT Partner (ICIP) program in East Africa. The program will endeavor to recruit, train and certify ICT professionals in burgeoning markets so that affordable technology solutions and support will be readily available in remote and rural communities.
Inveneo Mission
Inveneo is a non-profit social enterprise whose mission is to get the tools of ICT into the hands of organizations and people who need them most -- those in remote and rural communities in the developing world. To do this, Inveneo creates and sells highly affordable and sustainable ICTs (Information and Communication Technologies) that are specifically designed for organizations -- governments, NGOs, private enterprises -- that serve these rural communities with vital services that include education, healthcare, economic development, relief and telecenters. Our ICTs are designed to overcome challenges that these organizations face:
- Lack of dependable, if any, electricity
- Extremely high cost of power
- Prevalence of heat, dust, moisture and humidity, often punishing conditions for ICTs
- Lack of affordable access to Internet and telephony services
- Novice users and administrators
The products include:
- Ultra low-power computers
- Long distance wireless (WiFi) Local Area Networking (LAN) gear
- VoIP telephony software and integrated hardware
- Free and Open source operating systems for servers and desktops
Expertise
Inveneo has developed a new, open and highly sustainable approach to installing and support its ICT solutions. In each country where they work, Inveneo recruits, trains and certifies local “Inveneo Certified ICT Partners” (ICIPs). Typically, these ICIPs are ICT professionals and small business entrepreneurs. They provide installation and support for the organizations we serve to improve affordability and increase the level of local support dramatically while providing new revenue opportunities to the entrepreneur, building the local ICT economy.
Connectivity
Inveneo’s Communication System incorporates the open WiFi standard (802.11 b/g) for long distance LAN networking and, when necessary, for backhaul connectivity to any local available Internet and Telephony Service Provider. In rural and remote areas, Internet and telephony connectivity is often available only via costly satellite access. By bringing affordable services to these areas, Inveneo helps minimize ongoing costs and barriers to adoption. Inveneo incorporates long-distance wireless networking in its solution to extend access of affordable communications to distances of up to 100 kilometers. The same WiFi networking capability can be used to create wireless broadband networks between locations so there can be true broadband network for exchanging email, pictures and/or using VoIP telephony, even if connectivity to the public Internet is limited.
